University proud to play a part in orchid and bonsai show

IUKL / Wednesday, 20 December 2017 / Published in Media News, Architecture Studies

THE Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL) was given the honour of being a co-organiser for the Kuala Lumpur Orchid and Bonsai Show (KLOBS 2017) held at Taman Pudu Ulu, Cheras.

The active participation of lecturers and students from IUKL’s Faculty of Architecture and Built Environment over the years in many national events led Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to appoint Acting Dean Md Pilus Md Noor as coordinator of the Student Village project for the show.

IUKL vice-chancellor and president Prof Dr Roslan Zainal Abidin said the lecturers and students’ hard work and participation in off-campus activities caused DBKL to select the university to be involved with the project.

He said IUKL had won the Gold Award and Creative Design Award for the University Design Garden at the Royal Floria, Putrajaya in 2015 beating 25 teams from other public and private universities.

“IUKL also emerged second in the sculpture competition at the Alam Assembly of Landscape Architecture Students Malaysia 2017, held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM),” said Dr Roslan.

Dr Roslan also thanked DBKL for having confidence in IUKL’s capability by granting RM20,000 to manage and organise the Student Village.

IUKL and four other institutions of higher learning namely International Islamic University Malaysia, Polytechnic Premier, Johor Baru; Polytechnic Port Dickson and Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College were roped in to organise activities at the Student Village.

Md Pilus said the Student Village project gave architecture students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field.

“Architecture is a continuous learning process, thus it is not confined to the classroom.

“Students should be familiar with building materials, understand building construction concepts and project management; that utilises limited resources, know how to design and the right to construct.

“Four hundred architecture students from diploma to degree levels and 30 lecturers from IUKL attended ‘classes’ at the Student Village throughout the carnival.

“Five lecturers from various universities gave talks relating to architectural works,” said Md Pilus.

The Student Village is a specially designed venue where students from institutions of higher learning showcase their work such as building model designs, installations and landscape architecture.

Students also participated in various competitions held at the Student Village during the nine-day event which ended yesterday.

The competitions included the Floral Fashion Show, Garden Sculpture and Wall Painting.

KLOBS 2017 is a bi-annual event organised by DBKL to celebrate the varied species of orchid and bonsai trees.

This international carnival has 14 participating countries including those from the Asean region, China, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and India.
