On 4 September 2019, the Centre for Foundation and General Studies (CFGS) organised the IEP Day 2019 for the second time this year after its first event was held in February 2019. This one-day-event consisted of several sessions held on the same day. The Welcoming and Opening speech was delivered by Ms Zeena Mahmood (Head of the Intensive English Programme (IEP) and Ms Nalinah Poongavanam (Director of CFGS) respectively. The event began with oral presentations by all the IEP students from Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 in June Semester 2019. The students were assessed by lecturers from the IEP programme and Human Sciences and Communication Departments. The presentation was aimed at improving the students’ presentation skills and providing them the opportunity to practise speaking English outside the classroom. The presentation session ended at 11.30am with a Closing speech delivered by both Ms Nalinah Poongavanam and Ms Zeena Mahmood.
In the afternoon, the IEP Day 2019 continued with the IEP Award Ceremony, which was officiated by Ms Nalinah Poongavanam. The purpose of this IEP Award Ceremony is to appreciate all the IEP students for their academic achievement in their IELTS test and completion of the IEP programme, and non-academic activities like Scrabble Competition and Spelling Bee Competition.
During the IEP Completion Ceremony Ms Nalinah Poongavanam presented the IEP Completion certificates to the Level 2 and Level 3 students who had successfully completed their programme in the September/October Semester 2018 and March Semester 2019. For the September/October Semester 2018, a total of four students from Level 2 and twenty four from Level 3, had successfully completed the programme. As for March Semester 2019, a total of six students from Level 2 and thirty three students from Level 3 received the IEP Completion certificate.
Besides the Completion Ceremony, the IEP Award Ceremony also witnessed the appreciation of students who had obtained outstanding overall score for the IELTS (Academic) test taken during their IEP studies in the September/October Semester 2018 and March Semester 2019. Ms. Nalinah Poongavanam awarded the Certificate of Achievement to eight outstanding IELTS test achievers.
Among the outstanding achievers, CFGS is proud to announce that Alaama Omar was awarded the outstanding IELTS trophy in addition to the Certificate of Achievement for obtaining the highest overall band score of 8.0 in his IELTS test taken in September/October Semester 2018.
As a motivation to the rest of the students, the best IELTS Score achiever Alaama Omar was later asked to give a speech on his experience taking and performing very well in the IELTS.
The event ended with closing remarks by Ms Nalinah Poongavanam and Ms Zeena Mahmood. In conclusion, the IEP Day 2019 was a great get-together-day for all those who had attended this event.
