The Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL) has been successfully organising the ‘Smile for IUKL’ Campaign annually since its inception in 2012. Every year a different theme is used to help instil values amongst the university’s staff members and students. This year, the theme is “Efficiency” and “Being Effective.”
In conjunction with the theme and to promote a culture of keeping things/belongings/stuff organised and sorted in order to be efficient at the workplace as well as in the home, a ‘Recycling Day’ and ‘Jumble Sale’ was held on 3 July 2015.
Collection centres were designated around campus for the expediency of staff and students to place materials for recycling such as papers, boxes, plastic items and aluminium cans. Running concurrently with the Recycling Day was the Jumble Sale. 13 booths were set up at the Atrium of the Faculty of Architecture and Built Environment where staff members and students sold used items in good condition such as clothes, books, shoes, bags, scarves, gadgets, and accessories.
Good stewardship of the environment is a personal responsibility and a significant public value, and through the ‘Recycling Day’ and ‘Jumble Sale’, the many benefits of recycling were highlighted. By taking steps to reduce waste and re-use materials, we can save precious natural resources and the environment.
