The professional talk “A Case Study in Traffic and Transportation Engineering & Challenges Working as a Traffic/Transportation Engineer” for students taking these courses; Transportation Planning (CIVE 4217) and High-Rise Design Project (CIVE4813) was successfully organized by the FEST. The talk was held on Wednesday, 27th January 2021 via Zoom online platform. About 70 students taking the two courses attended the talk. The invited speaker, Ir. Ong Sheng How graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Royal Melbourne Institute Technical (RMIT) University, Melbourne, Australia in the year 2000.
Ir. Ong has been in the profession for almost 19 years which include i) traffic and transport engineering and planning (14.5 years), ii) civil infrastructure design (2.5 years) and iii) construction site work (2 years) in Malaysia. He is also registered with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM) as a Professional Civil Engineer with Practicing Certificate and Corporate Member under the Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). Now he is a Principal Traffic/Transport Engineering Consultant in Penang. During the talk, he elaborated on his experience on one of the case studies in traffic impact assessment (TIA) project. Besides that, he spoke about the challenges of working as a traffic/transportation engineer in Malaysia.
It is hoped that the talk will be beneficial and meaningful to the students who are taking the Transportation Planning course under the Bachelor of Civil Engineering with honours programme.
